At the turn of the century, a project was undertaken to restore the stream channel, riparian corridor, and floodplain wetlands on a 21-acre property along Burd Run. The stream channely had been artificially straightened in the past to accommodate farming adjacent land. Today it is a natural habitat for numerous species and home to the Burd Run Nature trail.

Shippensburg Township is unusual in that it is non-contiguous, being divided by the Borough of Shippensburg into four separate parts. In addition to the Borough, the township adjoins Hopewell and Southampton townships in Cumberland County, and Southampton Township in Franklin County to the west.
